The Everett Railroad is a common carrier, class
III short line stretching from Duncansville, PA to Martinsburg,
Curryville and Sproul, PA, a total of 25 miles. Organized in 1954
on trackage originally owned by the Huntingdon
& Broad Top Mountain Railroad, the Everett has provided
freight service to Blair and Bedford counties for over fifty years.
Originally operating north from a Pennsylvania Railroad interchange
at Mt. Dallas, through the town of Everett and into Tatesville,
the railroad served several local industries. In the second-half
of the 1960s, steam-powered excursions were provided behind a former-Morehead
& North Fork Baldwin 2-6-2.

The Everett lost their major shipper, Tatesville
Silica, in 1961. Over the next 20 years, the railroad would operate
on an as-needed schedule. When Conrail (the successor to the Pennsylvania
Railroad) abandoned their Mount Dallas Branch in 1982, the Everett's
only connection to the outside world was severed. The Everett had
no choice but to shut down.
In 1984, the Everett moved their operations to Blair County, purchasing
the northernmost end of Conrail's then-embargoed Bedford Secondary
between Brooks Mills and Sproul. In 1985, the railroad was contracted
to operate the Morrison's Cove Railroad - a shipper-owned agricultural
line between Roaring Spring, Martinsburg and Curryville.

A sister company, the Hollidaysburg & Roaring Spring Railroad, was formed in 1995 to purchase Conrail's Cove Secondary between its namesake towns. The Everett was contracted as the owner, and its disjoint Morrision's Cove and Claysburg operations were finally connected, placing 25 miles of trackage under their control. Today's Everett continues to serve Blair County, Monday through Friday of each week. Their interchange is with Norfolk Southern at Duncansville. |
